In addition to the other can’t-miss this week — Jacques Tati’s Playtime at the Belcourt — here’s one more phenomenal event going on in Music City. (Next Big Nashville? Never heard of it!) The other can’t-miss is the second annual SoundCrawl, accompanying the monthly ArtCrawl at the Arcade. We interviewed co-curator Aaron Doenges on Theatre Intangible here. Go check it out. The SoundCrawl will happen from 6 to 9, Saturday, October 2nd at the downtown Arcade art galleries.
Last year’s SoundCrawl was really more of a test run. This year will sport many improvements, including the use of headphones in those loud art galleries. If you miss it Saturday, it will be up all month at the Rymer gallery. I’m in Las Vegas for the Matador 21 Lost Weekend festival (sad, I know), so I look forward to hearing the pieces later in the month at the Rymer.
Here’s the press release and the list of artists:
Nashville, TN – After a successful inaugural year, SoundCrawl:Nashville returns this October with highly anticipated new variations and a list of exceptional works. On the evening of October 2nd, from six to nine p.m. SoundCrawl:Nashville will once again indulge the ears of music city to some of the worlds best experimental sound art. However…the directors have something new planned for Nashville this year – an inclusion of some of the finest audio/video collaborations and a month long presence downtown. This year the directors of SC:N, local composers Aaron Doenges and Kyle Baker, opened the call for works to include not only submissions from some of the finest sound artists from across the globe, but to video artists and collaborations as well. The result is a list of compositions that will not only tickle the eardrums of the city, but also tease the eyes with movement and color. “I’m excited to move into video as we position ourselves to bring the best in avant garde digital art to Nashville,” says Baker. “These genres are at the forefront of artistic expression, and we’re grateful to our sponsors for helping SoundCrawl grow in this way.” Along with new mediums of expression, SoundCrawl is expanding into a month-long exhibit and will find itself at home in the Rymer Gallery for all of October. “We’re delighted by the support that our friends in the galleries have given us,” expressed Doenges. “The opportunity have a great opening celebration and to expand into a month long show gives us a lot of confidence in where this art form is going and in Nashville’s responsive ears.” SoundCrawl has also gained the supportive ears of Shure Audio, JBL, Vision2Marketing and others this year, through sponsorships which have aided in the development of this year’s programming. SoundCrawl:Nashville will take place in conjunction with ArtCrawl from six to nine p.m. and is free and open to the public. Opening night venues include Twist Gallery, Sperka Gallery, Ryan Hutchinson in studio #61, BelArt, The Downtown Presbyterian Church and The Rymer Gallery. Maps identifying the locations of the installations as well as providing information on each work will be available at the galleries and headquarters during the event. Audio compilations will also be available for purchase. For more information about SoundCrawl:Nashville, visit www.soundcrawlnashville.com.
