Rangda
People, from time to time a show comes to town that is an absolute DO-NOT-MISS-AS-IF-YOUR-LIFE-DEPENDED-ON-IT. Tonight at Open Lot is such a show.
First, we have the supergroup Rangda, which features members of Sun City Girls and Six Organs of Admittance. Their drummer Chris Corsano has played with Evan Parker and Jandek!
Next, we have the Seattle-based experimental/epic/rock trio The Diminished Men.
Also playing is the local singer/songwriter John Allingham of the Cherry Blossoms and experimental duo Leslie Keffer and Scott Martin. You may know Leslie as the concert booker for Nashville sports bar/experimental mecca Betty’s Bar & Grill. Scott plays in bands too numerable to mention, but let’s hope Lambchop suffices. We interviewed Leslie a few months ago. Check it out here.

The Diminished Men are an excellent Seattle WA trio of guitar, bass and drums who trade in Middle Eastern surf rave-ups and moody film-noir/Morricone/Badalamenti-inspired pieces reimagined in a rock context.
They are also the backing band of UK crooner Herb Diamante who appeared on the Mr. Lonely sndtrk.

Leslie Keffer plays homemade cassette loops and electronics to create a lush, Kate Bush-inspired electronic ambience over the top of Scott Martin’s sinuous flow of evolving beats which call to mind the savage multidirectional drumming of Jack DeJohnette on Live Evil-era Miles Davis and Charles Hayward’s endless beat permutations with This Heat and Camberwell Now. Scott Martin also plays a sampler, adding to the wash of electronics and navigating the instrumental music through skillful transitions with a DJ’s sensibility.

Guitarist singer/songwriter with the Cherry Blossoms and Arizona Drains; longtime collaborator of local songwriter Ann Tiley. John is heavily influenced by surf music, South African township jazz, country blues, dixieland and skiffle. John’s solo guitar music is unique…the closest I’ve heard is the Crab Tunes/Noggins lp on Raccoon or Michael Hurley’s more abstract playing.
