Nashville composer, coder, oboist, new media artist, and Circuit Benders’ Ball alum Robbie Lynn Hunsinger will perform Friday, March 11 at 8 p.m. at the Centennial Black Box Theatre. The event is a part of Metro Parks’ experimental arts series Free Form Friday.

Hunsinger will be joined by award-winning double-bassist Missy Raines and Nashville Symphony English horn player Roger Wiesmeyer. Hunsinger will perform on oboe, saxophone, Irish whistles, and various electronic gear. Expect a guest appearance by the Arduino drummer (although this time it may switch from snare to cymbal).

Rumor has it that Hunsinger may be bringing a scaled-down version of her phenomenal Frist Museum interactive installation Blue-Yellow-Red. (Read about Blue-Yellow-Red in Make Magazine.)

Nashville composer, oboist, new media artist, and Circuit Benders’ Ball alum Robbie Hunsinger will present an interactive installation at the Frist Center this Sunday. Hunsinger’s website calls it a “Kandinsky-inspired interactive pop-up installation and transmedia composition exploring Synethesia.”

If you can’t make it out Sunday, come back Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for an interactive performance featuring double-bassist Missy Raines. Raines won “Bass Player of the Year” seven times from the International Bluegrass Association, so Thursday will be your chance to see one of Nashville’s most innovative new media artists paired with one of Nashville’s most accomplished musicians. And it’s all free!

While there, don’t miss the retrospective on the world’s most famous (alleged) synesthete, Wassily Kandinsky. The Frist is open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays!

Robbie Lynn Hunsinger is a Nashville-based musician, multimedia artist, hacker, coder, and all-around amazing person. She collaborated with architect Douglas Garofalo on a Museum of Contemporary Art installation. She’s also a Grammy-winning oboist with the Chicago Symphony. We’re extremely fortunate to have her in Nashville.

On Sunday, November 10th, Robbie is teaching a class on creative coding at Boheme Collectif. If you’ve ever wanted to integrate an Xbox Kinect or Wiimote into your project or learn the software programs Processing and Pure Data, this class is for you.  No prior experience is necessary. This class is part two in a series. If you missed the first class, don’t worry. It’s not a prerequisite. Robbie will do a brief review.

Second installment! Beginner class in writing creative code for interactive art and music. Bring in your images, sounds and video and we will explore using them with Processing. Robbie will also introduce Pure Data, another amazingly powerful program that many of us use with sound work. Processing and Pure Data are both cross-platform

What to Bring:

  • Laptop with Processing and Pure Data installed. (Free via the links)
  • Headphones or earbuds.
  • Media files (mp3, mov, jpeg, tiff, etc) for use in class.
  • Webcam highly recommended

Nashville musician and multi-media artist Robbie Lynn Hunsinger has a new exhibit opening up at Seed Space on Friday, May 10th from 6pm to 8pm. The reactive sound sculpture is a collaboration with Middle Tennessee Robotic Art Society members Patrick Becker and Steve Ghertner. Skitter Flutter sounds absolutely fascinating, and I can’t wait to check it out on Friday.

The press release at robbiehunsinger.com says Skitter Flutter,

grew partially out of Hunsinger’s Arduino and Sax duet for robotic drummer that she premiered at Soundcrawl 2012.

Skitter Flutter is also heavily influenced by Hunsinger’s years of pre-dawn bird rescue in the Chicago area as Founder of The Chicago Bird Collision Monitors program, a very successful conservation effort in which volunteers save injured and stunned migratory birds that have struck buildings.

She became fascinated with the idea of creating an invisible array of reactive sounds similar to small mammals, insects or birds but created entirely by motors. Sounds pull the viewer in but dissipate upon investigation, much as crickets grow quiet as we approach.

The mirror neuron creates a reaction in an observer which reflects the chemical changes in the person actually experiencing an event firsthand, which seems to manifest the neurological existence of empathy.

“You get hit, I flinch.” These interactive sound sculptures encourage this type of response. They are as much felt as seen or heard.
