New WeHo venue?

Kathryn Edwards of The Other Booking and former resident at Nashville house venue The Other Basement just signed the lease on a Third Avenue South property adjacent to Houston Street. (Check out the profile I did of Kathryn at Nashville Arts Magazine.) The block was formerly residential, but it’s all being rezoned for commercial use, thanks to the efforts of the owners of a coffeehouse being built across the street.

The venue will be a valuable asset to the Wedgewood/Houston community. While we have many art galleries, a record company, and a record pressing plant, we still don’t have a full time concert venue in the neighborhood. Edwards is one of the most passionate and hardworking show bookers in Nashville, and there’s no one better suited to the task. She’s raising funds at IndieGoGO, and anything you can throw in would be greatly appreciated. There are only four days left in the campaign, so give now.

Our house venue Noa Noa opens its doors again (temporarily) on Tuesday, June 9th at 9:30pm to host the triumphant return of instrument designer, circuit bender, and ambient composer Tim Kaiser. Also performing are fellow Circuit Benders’ Ball alums Carl Oliver (improvised Eurorack synthesis) and Brady Sharp (PureData-manipulated guitar). Don’t miss it! The chances to see a show at Noa Noa are few and far between. Come to think of it, we need to clean the basement.

More info on the Facebook event page. Check out the videos below to see if it’s your thing.

There are many things to do this Saturday, but two events are especially worth your time. At abrasiveMedia at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m., alt-classical ensemble Chatterbird will be premiering Minor-Born, a new commission by Nashville composer/songwriter/pianist Brooke Waggoner. Expect toy pianos, typewriters, saxophone, electronics, bassoon, and more as they perform works by Daniel Wohl, Logan Castro, Bryan Clark, Jacob TV, Alex T. Leach, Randy Woolf, Gene Koshinski, and Ted Hearne. Tickets are $15 in advance at this link or $20 at the door. This show will very likely sell out, so advance purchase is highly recommended. More info at the Facebook event page.

Next is the final show at The Rushmore house venue’s current location. The bill features Circuit Benders’ Ball alum Cher Von, Modular Art Pods alum Kyle Numann, and Nashville songwriter Justin Goldman. I’ve written about Cher Von plenty of times in the past. She’s a true original, a phenomenal melody writer, and star in the making. The show starts at 9 p.m., and there’s a $3 cover. More info on the Facebook event page.

Watch the videos below to see what you’re in for.

Watkins professor Morgan Higby-Flowers organized a weekend residency with School of the Art Institute of Chicago professor James Connolly, who creates instruments by hacking old audio/visual equipment. On Saturday, May 2nd at Coop Gallery in the Arcade, Connolly will perform RGB.VGA.VOLT, a work performed on a synthesizer made from cathode ray tube monitors. According to Connolly, the synthesizer was inspired by Nam June Paik’s television synthesizers and the early video synth, the Sandin Image Processor.

There will be two performances: one at 7 p.m. and another at 8 p.m. While you’re at the Arcade, enjoy the rest of the Downtown Art Crawl. Joe Nolan at the Nashville Scene has the details on the rest here.
