Still from Age video 0vent .

Here’s Theatre Intangible podcast 107: Age Artist showcase, recorded on March 30th, 2013.

Age is the “horizontal sound composition process” of Josh Gumiela and Luke Rainey, and it’s based around a very innovative technique. One artist presents a sound. The other samples that sound and alters it in some way – perhaps speeding it up, slowing it down, degrading it, or chopping it up. The first artist then samples the altered sound. The other artist then samples the altered altered sound. And so on. Soon the sound becomes unrecognizable and the improv progresses in an indeterminate direction, much like the pointer of a Ouija board.

Age performed this improv in the afternoon. They left their gear set up and performed live later in the evening as a part of a lineup also including Brady Sharp and Lyrebird. I also recorded Age’s live performance, and you can download it here.

We at Noa Noa house are extremely proud and lucky to be hosting Simon Joyner for the Nashville stop on his winter living room tour.  The event takes place Friday, December 13th at 8 p.m. Tickets are ADVANCE SALES ONLY. Purchase yours at this link. Update: I just heard from Simon that they will also accept cash at the door! $15, exact change preferred.

Who is Simon Joyner? Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes and the Desaparecidos called him, “probably my favorite songwriter in the world.”  He’s also one of my favorites. More from Simon’s wiki:

Considered by some to be the forefather of the burgeoning Omaha music scene, he has profoundly influenced the music of Bright Eyes. Joyner also collaborated with John Darnielle, of The Mountain Goats, and Beck listed Joyner in his top 10 albums when asked by Rolling Stone. He is also famous for the so called “Peel Incident,” when famous British DJ John Peel played his album The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll from beginning to end on air.

Don’t miss your chance to see a true music pioneer in an intimate setting.

Simon’s new album Ghosts is available on vinyl and mp3 at his website, Amazon.com, and your favorite independent record shop.

Chris Davis organized an incredible lineup here at Theatre Intangible h.q. aka Noa Noa for Saturday, November 9th.

  • Nathan Bowles & Scott Verrastro
  • Joseph Allred
  • Noa (with Chris Davis)

Blacksburg, Virginia’s Nathan Bowles and Philadelphia’s Scott Verrastro lead very busy lives with their bands and solo projects. Bowles is a member of Pigeons, Pelt and Black Twig Pickers among others. Verrastro performs in Kohoutek, Kuschty Rye ErgoInsect Factory (leader Jeff Barsky played Noa Noa earlier this year) and many more projects.

For this tour, they’re combining forces as an experimental improv percussion duo. If the songs from their new album Polar Satellites are any measure, the show at Noa Noa is a can’t-miss evening of music.

The wonderful Joseph Allred plays fingerstyle instrumental music on an acoustic guitar.

Noa is an improvising musician and multi-instrumentalist, performing on woodwinds, various percussion instruments, hurdy gurdy and other instruments. She will improvise with Chris Davis (The Cherry Blossoms).

More info on the Facebook event page. I hope to see you at the show!

Talk about a great lineup coming out of nowhere — our Experimental Series #6 at Noa Noa tomorrow evening fell into place in a matter of days. First, Brighton, Great Britain noise artist and show organizer Freudian Slit wrote me asking what events were going on while they were visiting Nashville. We ended up scheduling this show. Freudian Slit met Age, Virginia Griswold, and Morgan-Higby-Flowers at the NO MEDIA event during the Clarksville Art Walk, and we added those artists to the bill.

Then, Theatre Intangible collaborator Thomas Helton wrote me to let me know his friend Joe Hertenstein would be in town Friday and might be persuaded to perform. Thus, this morning, the bill for the Noa Noa Experimental Series #6 was finalized.

Friday’s theme is “Supersized Mess — Bigger, cheaper, faster, more more more!”

Here’s a bit more about each artist:

  • Freudian Slit is a British Genderqueer activist come noise musician. Messing up some supersized menu items for your viewing pleasure. And hopefully your bleeding ears.
  • Joe Hertenstein is a New York City-based drone/avant-garde/free improv drummer, originally hailing from Germany. He’s played with heavy hitters such as Mat Maneri, Anthony Coleman, Ken Filiano, Frank Gratkowski, Jon Irabagon, Achim Tang, Thomas Helton, Pascal Niggenkemper, Mikko Innanen, Todd Neufeld, Simon Jermyn, and Thomas Heberer. Tonight, he’ll be joined by special guests Randy Hunt and Jamison Sevits.
  • Age explores electronic copying nastiness as a new tonal language – Josh Gumiela and Luke Rainey, based in Nashville, TN.
  • Virginia Griswold & Morgan Higby-Flowers make dirt-filthy, loud, stroboscopic noise and visuals cutting through wet porcelain.

Our show starts at 10pm, so you’ll have plenty of time to catch the 7:30pm show Concurrence & Dig Deep Light Show at Free Form Fridays at the Centennial Black Box Theatre.

Check out videos from the touring artists below. More info on the Facebook event page.
