Theatre Intangible contributor Rhendi Greenwell is organizing a music and visual art show at Open Lot, Saturday, February 26th. The concept is emergence — complexity arising from simplicity. Experimental improvised music lends itself well to this concept, and Rhendi asked me to help find performers for the show. Kentucky cancer researcher Margaret Oechsli put the antibiotic powder mitomycin under her lens. Viewed through polarizing filters, the drug gave off colors that reveal its complex crystal structure.

To give you an idea of what we’re looking for, here’s what one artist is doing: Water slowly drips into a pan. Gradually, more and more water drips into various pans. The drips form loops, and eventually the room reverberates with a chaotic, cacophonous collection of dripping water.

What might you do? Build something with your improv. Start small. Let the environment take it into an unplannable, indeterminable direction. The result should be as much a surprise to you as it is to the audience.

“Emergent systems ( or just ’emergence’ is a mathematical model that remains elusive despite wide use and frequent occurrence in nature. A flock of birds may be thought of as an example of an emergent structure. No one bird controls the direction of the flock, yet a complex pattern arises out of a multiplicity of simple interactions.

“There are many examples of emergence in biology (swarms, colonies and biospheres), chemistry (polypeptide chains), physics (color), psychology (the mind), economies (stock market), cities (urban planning), mathematics (Mobius strip), and, of course, networks (topologies).” — Marc Johnson, Emerging Emergence

Open to: Systems Theory, Science, and Art.

Spontaneous order as seen in nature. A sort of spontaneous grandeur. High level phenomena. Basic principles give way to complexity.

Visuals:
Organic matter. Microscopic cell shaped abstractions. Self-building systems. Complex sculpture out of simple components.

Soundscapes:
Water. Metal. Glass. Breath. Echo. Loops. Emergent improvisation. Simple components with the possibility of eventual complex layers.
