Betty’s Grill on the west side has been kicking ass lately. When artist and promoter Leslie Keffer stopped working there, everyone assumed Betty’s would stop booking experimental music. But now thanks to the efforts of Betty’s booker Crom Giguere, they’re booking more great shows than ever before.

Case in point: Tonight’s show with Chicago’s The Humminbird. Singer Muyassar Kurdi channels spirits with  harmonium, autoharp, Raagini, and other instruments. sugar sk*-*lls‘ Ben Marcantel creates melodies with a Nintendo Gameboy. Voight Kampff Duo (Brady Sharp and Stephen Seifert) create experimental improv music with prepared guitar and synthesizers. Peggy and John play in The Cherry Blossoms and will be performing as a duo tonight.

Listen to the songs below to see if it’s your thing. More info on the Facebook event page.

Circuit Benders’ Ball alum Joey Molinaro will be back in town Sunday night for a show at Betty’s Grill. (Btw, the full lineup for Circuit Benders’ Ball 2014 will be announced here VERY SOON!)

Also on the Betty’s bill are Graphic Tease, Marid, and Pleasuredome. Graphic Tease is the noise project of Maddy Madeira from How Cozy. Pleasuredome is the solo project of Anderson Cook, 1/2 of Hadals. Marid is a band inspired by Persian black metal, featuring members of The Most Amazing Century of Science, Protomen, and Call Me Savage. This should be an amazing show. Joey is consistently kickass.

You can find out more on the Facebook event page.

Sadly, I will be out of town for Big Ears Fest in Knoxville. Please take lots of pictures and videos for me!

Tim and Chris Murray (Square People, Textbook Punk) are releasing a split cassette and performing. Also on the bill are the Xists, the brilliant project of wrestler Jocephus Brody and his brother. Other bands include Malocchio (Derek Schartung), Brady Sharp, Sparkling Wide Pressure (Frank Baugh), Harvest Team (Reid Cambell), Terror’ish, Spacemen Saturday Night, and Dug. Each band will perform for 15 minutes or less.
