Still from a/v synth performance at Transcinema, 1999, Benton C. Bainbridge

Still from a/v synth performance at Transcinema, 1999, Benton C. Bainbridge

Here’s episode 104: Adventure Bomb: Projecting, a revised and expanded edition of the set I performed at Soundcrawl in collaboration with Benton-C Bainbridge’s live video projection mapping (“Fast-mapping”). Recorded at Brick Factory Nashville. Best experienced through headphones.

Adventure Bomb is my experimental “scoop & loop” solo project.  “Scoop & loop” is a performance-style that involves scooping out sections of recordings and looping them live … basically, audio juggling.

Benton-C Bainbridge is a media artist based in The Bronx, working with custom systems of his own design. Benton has presented immersive environments, screenings, installations and live performances across five continents, collaborating with scores of artists around the world. He even has a Wikipedia page! (Someone should add this collaboration!)

Soundcrawl is a sound art and new media organization led by Kyle Baker presenting works by the best and brightest new media artists and composers in a unique “opt in” gallery format.

“Projecting” is comprised of:

  • Interviews with Soundcrawl attendees. As they listened to Soundcrawl “sound art” selections via headphones, they were asked to describe what they were hearing. The central idea to this experiment was seeing if I could “map” their descriptions onto the music I was generating live.
  • Snippets of live musical performances occurring at Soundcrawl 2012.
  • Instruments performed by Adventure Bomb live, including a Casio Sk-1 keyboard, circuit-bent toys and various effects.
  • Sound effects and field recordings from Freesound.org. Freesound aims to create a huge collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps, etc … released under Creative Commons licenses that allow their reuse. Listeners are encouraged to donate to Freesound.

The interviewees (in order of appearance):

  • Lesley Beeman
  • Unknown (Let me know if you can identify this person)
  • Antonia Oakes
  • Joe Nolan
  • Tony Youngblood
  • Ilana Morgan
  • Ryan Hogan
  • Unknown (Let me know if you can identify this person)

The 2012 Soundcrawl performers sampled (in alphabetical order):

  • Jason Fick
  • Timothy Harenda
  • Ilana Morgan
  • Adam Vidiksis
  • Sally Williams
  • Mark Zanter

If you love making stuff (and you’re not a fan of cinematic essays on the cultural chasm between the First and Third worlds), then you need to attend this Thursday’s Science Cafe at the Adventure Science Center.

Science Cafe is a series of informal discussions on current issues in science. This month’s talk is all about making stuff! The speaker is Chris Lee of Anode, Inc. Chris is one of the organizers of the inaugural Nashville Mini Maker Faire (September 21st, 2013), and he builds AMAZING things like this, thisthis, and this. Oh, and did I mention he’s building a full scale Millennium Falcon?

Here’s what the Adventure Science Center had to say about Thursday’s event:

Recent innovations such as open-source design, crowdsourcing, and 3-D printing are enabling inventors to become entrepreneurs. Chris Lee will talk about maker culture, tinkering, and the fun of “learning by doing.”

Chris Lee (chrislee.me) has been making things, building gadgets, and creating costumes and props as a hobby since 1977. He is a founding member of the Apparition Abolishers, (apparitionabolishers.com) a steampunk costuming group. He creates all of the weapons, hard costume gear, and most of the props used by the group. The group is currently promoting their steampunk sideshow known as “Dr. Torque’s Traveling Exposition of Curious Contraptions and Fantastical Oddities,” which debuted during GMX 2011 (geekmediaexpo.com). In 1995, Chris was one of the first stormtroopers of the 501st Legion (501st.com), which has grown to thousands of active members worldwide. He is a member of the Rebel Legion and R2 Builders club (astromech.net). His droid R2-G4 can be seen at many conventions and charity events. Chris is also building an online community (fullscalefalcon.com) to crowdsource the construction a full scale replica of the Millennium Falcon. In the business world, Chris is VP of Technology for Anode, Inc. (anode.com) where he has worked for over 20 years creating world-class interactive experiences for museums, science centers, schools, and libraries.

Perfumed-Nightmare

James Cathcart and Ben Swank over at the Third Man Records / Belcourt Theatre monthly avant garde film series Light and Sound Machine are on a roll. I’m still thinking about last month’s Nam June Paik retrospective.

This month, they outdo themselves with the first of the series to be screened on glorious 16mm film: Kidlat Tahimik’s Perfumed Nightmare.

This is a RARE opportunity to see this film projected. Do not miss!

Why? This description on the Belcourt and Third Man sites is far better than anything I could write:

Perhaps cinema’s most humorous and poignant essay on the cultural chasm between the First and Third worlds, PERFUMED NIGHTMARE is the quasi-autobiographical account of an acute case of cultural dementia. Kidlat Tahimik, the Pilipino-born, American-educated, German-based filmmaker and global citizen casts himself as Kidlat Tahimik, the primitive naif with an awe-struck enchantment with the wonders of the developed world. The semi fictional Tahimik is a taxi (or “jeepney”) driver by day who clutches his transistor radio by night, religiously tuned-in to Voice of America and forever dreaming of the heavens – he’s the president of a fan club for Werner von Braun, the defected Nazi rocket scientist who pioneered the American space program. His filmic diary is a collage of village anecdotes and imagery, presented with varying degrees of ethnographic exoticism and short wave radio chatter. However, his document is interrupted by the appearance of a comically sinister American businessman, offering Tahimik a new life in France, refilling his company’s gumball machines which conspicuously adorn the Parisian city streets. It is here that Perfumed Nightmare evokes a turn towards magical realism, and the illusion-shattering truths of the technology age transform Tahimik into something new – a once “sleeping typhoon”, now awakened and poised to literally blow away the symbols of Western domination, and himself back to his homeland.

Also check out the wonderful video excerpt below. Tickets will be available at the Third Man door, but I recommend you buy in advance via the Belcourt website.

Suspended by Aric Vance (EBNC)

Suspended by Aric Vance (EBNC)

This Friday if you’re not attending that obscure little music festival in the backwoods of Tennessee, consider coming to Noa Noa for an evening of experimental music.

The theme of Noa Noa Experimental Series #3 is “Loops & Bends,” three artists exploring circuit bending, sound collage, and creative looping.

Asheville, North Carolina’s EBNC (Aric Vance) headlines the evening. Aric last played Nashville at Betty’s Bar & Grill, and he was absolutely amazing. If you attended the 2012 Circuit Benders’ Ball Nashville, you saw Aric’s hypnotic video art, which explores extreme video compression, keyframe dumping, and frame concatenation. EBNC’s bio promises “an unusual mix of field recordings, samples, modular DSP programming, and hand-built/modified electronic instruments/effects to create a sound that ranges from a soothing, ambient wash to extremely harsh noise.”

Next up is Workshoppe Radio Phonik, the joint project of Pimpdaddysupreme and Matt the PM. They last worked together for Noa Noa Experimental Series #2 where Matt the PM projected live visuals as Pimpdaddysupreme played warped records on 6 simultaneous turntables. Matt took the board audio from that performance, recreated the visuals, and posted the results as a brilliant Youtube video. Matt and Pimpdaddysupreme also appeared together on this Theatre Intangible podcast.

Rounding out the bill is Adventure Bomb aka Tony Youngblood aka me. It’s my scoop & loop / arrhythmic sampling / circuit-bending project. Check out these two Adventure Bomb sets: Forecasting and Adventure Bomb Halloween Special.

More info on the Facebook event page. Hope to see you at Noa Noa on Friday!
