Chris Davis organized an incredible lineup here at Theatre Intangible h.q. aka Noa Noa for Saturday, November 9th.

  • Nathan Bowles & Scott Verrastro
  • Joseph Allred
  • Noa (with Chris Davis)

Blacksburg, Virginia’s Nathan Bowles and Philadelphia’s Scott Verrastro lead very busy lives with their bands and solo projects. Bowles is a member of Pigeons, Pelt and Black Twig Pickers among others. Verrastro performs in Kohoutek, Kuschty Rye ErgoInsect Factory (leader Jeff Barsky played Noa Noa earlier this year) and many more projects.

For this tour, they’re combining forces as an experimental improv percussion duo. If the songs from their new album Polar Satellites are any measure, the show at Noa Noa is a can’t-miss evening of music.

The wonderful Joseph Allred plays fingerstyle instrumental music on an acoustic guitar.

Noa is an improvising musician and multi-instrumentalist, performing on woodwinds, various percussion instruments, hurdy gurdy and other instruments. She will improvise with Chris Davis (The Cherry Blossoms).

More info on the Facebook event page. I hope to see you at the show!

Craig-Schenker

There are two great events happening in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood tonight, and as the scheduling gods have ordained, you should be able to catch (at least most of) both.

The first happens from 7pm to 9:30pm at the Notable Blends coffeehouse inside Houston Station. Tony Gerber and Bryan Burnett‘s space music project Auroric Dreams will perform to the live OpenGL visuals of artist Josh Gumiela.

From the Facebook event page:

Back together for a second live concert for the Nashville audience, Auroric Dreams will be performing live space music during the astronomical event, Neptune’s Opposition 2013 at the enchanting and intimate venue of Noteable Blends. Join us for a cosmic evening of music from Tony Gerber and Bryan Burnett and original motion graphic projections by video and sound installation artist, Josh Gumiela.

At Noa Noa house from 8:30pm to 12am, saxophonist Craig Schenker will perform his final Nashville show before moving to New York. Craig is one of the hardest working musicians in Nashville, having played with Square People, Lyrebird, Four Sided Circle, ArclyteAfton Wolfe, Lylas, Cenobium, and more.  He’s been on a whopping 17 Theatre Intangible episodes, and that doesn’t include several that are waiting to be published, including a Lyrebird artist showcase.

At his farewell show, Craig will conduct extemporaneous assemblies of past collaborators. The Facebook event page says Craig will,

curate the evening alternating pre-determined group/acts with spontaneous improvisational duos and trios chosen the night of the show.

Confirmed performers include:

If you know Craig or are a fan of his music, don’t miss this intimate final show. While there is a bit of an overlap between the two Wedgewood-Houston events, I’m guessing you’ll miss no more than 30 minutes of the latter if you decide to attend the former.

Here’s episode 103: Tim Barnes and William Tyler artist showcase, recorded July 13th, 2012.

Chris Davis organized a fantastic show at the Downtown Presbyterian Church featuring free jazz legends Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston. He also booked Louisville-by-way-of-New-York experimental percussionist Tim Barnes and Nashville guitarist William Tyler to perform that night, and that duet is what you’re about to hear. We released the Weston / Watts recording as episode 92.

Jesse Jarnow at AllMusic writes,

Tim Barnes emerged in the late 1990s, contributing to indie rock staples like the Silver Jews and the Elephant 6-affiliated Essex Green, as well as pop-fancying avant-garde mainstay Jim O’Rourke. . . He hovered on the edge of Sonic Youth’s world, as well, joining the band for their deeply psychedelic Koncertas Stan Brakhage Prisiminimui release and serving as occasional member in Lee Ranaldo’s Text of Light.

As a Louisville resident Tim has played with The For Carnation, MV+EE, Wooden Wand, Jason Ajemian, R Keenan Lawler, Jim Marlowe, Jordan Richardson, and Steve Good.

William Tyler is the founder of the excellent local record label Sebastian Speaks , member of Lambchop and the Silver Jews, and a session guitarist for Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Tim Chad and Sherry, Laura Cantrell and others. He just released his new instrumental album The Impossible Truth on Merge Records, and it’s been getting rave reviews. You can buy it via the Merge records online shop or your local record store.

Incidentally, William is performing a free outdoor show this Sunday, June 2nd, 4pm at Dragon Park. Details here. On Monday, June 3rd, he’ll be introducing the film Heaven’s Gate at the Belcourt Theatre prior to the 7pm screening. Thanks to Sam Smith for tipping me off to these events.
