Brady Sharp used to help book some pretty legendary experimental performers at art gallery Ruby Green. Now that they are no longer doing music, I am please to see Brady still booking groundbreaking work — and they don’t get much more legendary than experimental percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani. I defy you to watch this video and not wet yourself in anticipation of Saturday’s show at Zeitgeist:
Bias disclaimer: I helped with the booking of this show. The show will also feature Brady’s band Bluff Duo, along with saxophonist and Nashville Scene-contributor David Maddox. Bluff Duo doesn’t often play out, so it will be a treat to see them again. Their set at last year’s Buzz & Click was the show highlight. Brady and Dave have both appeared on Theatre Intangible. (Dave’s episode hasn’t been released as a podcast yet, but you can hear Brady on these two fine episodes.)
Experimental folk masters LYLAS round out the set. Kelli Shay Hix and Kyle Hamlett from LYLAS recently appeared on the Theatre Intangible improv Stone & Stream. It’s a good one!
What I’m most excited about is the final act: a Theatre Intangible live improv featuring all the performers! We’ll be recording this one for a future podcast.

ABOUT TATSUYA NAKATANI:
Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion) is originally from Osaka, Japan. In 2006 he performed in 80 cities in 7 countries and collaborated with 163 artists worldwide. In the past 10 years he has released nearly 50 recordings on CD.
He has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in improvised/ experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.
In addition to live solo and ensemble performances he works as a sound designer for film and television. He also teaches Masterclasses and Workshops at the University level. He also heads H&H Production, an independent record label and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was selected as a performing artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Artist on Tour (PennPat) roster as well as a Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant.

ABOUT BLUFF DUO
Bluff Duo was formed in 2004 as a musical exploration vehicle for David Maddox (saxes) and Brady Sharp (prepared guitar). Walking the line between melodic contours and textural noise, the music is freely-improvised, sometimes to a pre-conceived theme, and sometimes with no direction at all. These themes can be either melodic, harmonic, relational, or merely philosophical in nature, and these themes are usually employed with the intent that they can always be ignored or adapted as seems fitting for the moment.
David Maddox has been active in improvised music in Nashville, Houston, Chicago, and Washington DC and currently plays with the Cherry Blossoms, Forest Bride, and the duo Bluff with Brady Sharp. Among the musicians and bands he has played with are Susan Alcorn, Carol Genetti, Jim Baker, Philip Gayle, Warren Leming, John Sinclair, Robert Pearson, Jon Matis, Tom Bickley, Mr. Natural, Carl Smith, Tatsuya Nakatani, Rotten Piece, and Hands Off Cuba.
Brady Sharp discovered improvised music in the mid-90s and with Andrew Mays, Matt Hamilton, and Drew Rydberg, formed Voight-Kampff Music. He has continued to put on improvised music shows in Nashville, and has had the fortune of playing with the reputable likes of Peter Kowald, Chris Cutler, LaDonna Smith, Gino Robair, Susan Alcorn, Tatsuya Nakatani and many others. After a short-lived but well-received trio with Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard) and Brian Kotzur, Brady now plays with Dave Maddox (reeds) in Bluff Duo.
