I’m really happy to announce Modular Art Pods happening Saturday, February 7th during Arts & Music @ Wedgewood/Houston 6-10 p.m. at abrasiveMedia inside Houston Station (438 Houston Street, Nashville, TN). MAPs is the open-source community art tunnel that I’ve been working on for over a year, and it features 30 individually-curated pods. None of this could have happened without the hard work and creativity of the participating artists, which include:

Modular Art Pods will be unlike other art exhibitions you’ve attended. You could call it an “art haunted house,” and like haunted houses, you will have to wait in line to get in. So allow time for waiting. And wear comfortable clothes for crawling. If you are unable to crawl through, we also have a backlot walking tour that lets you peer in on the crawlers and see the behind-the-scenes magic.

MAPs isn’t the only show happening in the Wedgewood/Houston neighborhood Saturday night. Also check out Tom Shinness, Tony Gerber and Kirby Shelstad performing at Noteable Blends (also inside Houston Station) at 8p.m. and lots of other gallery openings, including Andrew O’Brien’s Talking Talking House at Seed Space, Fort Houston’s 3rd Birthday Bonanza, Ariel Lavery at The Packing Plant, the opening of Cumberland Gallery in Track One, and lots more. Also, MAPs participant Kayla Saito has a solo show at the WAG Gallery in the Arcade downtown. Joe Nolan has the details on these events and more at the Nashville Scene’s Crawl Guide.

Joe Nolan at the Nashville Scene has all the juicy details on Saturday’s art crawls, including the Replication 3D printing show at Fort Houston, which features a few of my pieces. There’s tons of stuff to see tomorrow, including the always-popular Porter Flea Market at Track One. Go read Joe’s article for all the specifics.

One thing he didn’t mention (but Laura Hutson wrote about) is the Paper, Thread, and Trash show at the Nashville Public Library, which opens Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Curated by Courtney Adair Johnson, the show addresses, “the issues of consumption and waste by using found and superfluous materials to build original and unique books through very literal interpretations to installations and conceptual based projects.” I have to admit, they had me at Nance Cooley’s automata sculpture in the image above. Just brilliant.

The show features the works of Aletha Carr, Nance Cooley, Meredith Eastburn, Kelly Falzone, Kathryn Gonzalez, Emily Holt, Courtney Adair Johnson, Megan Kelly, Kit Kite, Cynthia Marsh, Lesley Patterson-Marx, Nelson Meadows, Lisa Rivas, and Jamaica Shaw. Don’t miss it!

Modular Art Pods Call For Artists

Some of you who know me may have heard on this strange art exhibit idea I’ve been working on called Modular Art Pods. Basically, it’s a linear art tunnel comprised of individually-curated 4′ cubes. Each micro-gallery holds only one person, so you can confront the art without the distractions of free wine and conversation.

We just launched the MAPs site and announced the call for artists. If you’re interested in making a pod, apply here. The exhibition happens February 7th at abrasiveMedia, a wonderful new art center in Wedgewood/Houston.

Sunday and Thursday at Frist Center: Robbie Hunsinger’s Blue-Yellow-Red 11-16-2014

Nashville composer, oboist, new media artist, and Circuit Benders’ Ball alum Robbie Hunsinger will present an interactive installation at the Frist Center this Sunday. Hunsinger’s website calls it a “Kandinsky-inspired interactive pop-up installation and transmedia composition exploring Synethesia.”

If you can’t make it out Sunday, come back Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for an interactive performance featuring double-bassist Missy Raines. Raines won “Bass Player of the Year” seven times from the International Bluegrass Association, so Thursday will be your chance to see one of Nashville’s most innovative new media artists paired with one of Nashville’s most accomplished musicians. And it’s all free!

While there, don’t miss the retrospective on the world’s most famous (alleged) synesthete, Wassily Kandinsky. The Frist is open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays!
