Photo triptych of Peter Evans taken and created by C. Neil Scott.

Here at Noa Noa house, we never host shows on weekdays. Neighbors and stuff. So why are we hosting one this Tuesday?

Two reasons: PETER EVANS and TRAVIS LAPLANTE!!!

If you know anything about contemporary free jazz, you know the names Evans and LaPlante, two of the most important innovators in the New York jazz scene.

Here’s what Bowerbird says of Peter Evans:

Trumpeter Peter Evans is known for his super virtuosic cavalcade of furious blowing, madcap bebopping and nonstop circular breathing. He has an amazing list of collaborators, including: Mary Halvorson, Steve Beresford, Okkyung Lee, Keiji Haino, Jim Black, Evan Parker, Tyshawn Sorey, Peter Brotzmann, and many more. Peter also performs contemporary new music as a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).

And here’s what PopMatters had to say of Travis LaPlante’s 2011 album Heart Protector:

Solo saxophone albums aren’t as plentiful as, say, solo piano or guitar albums. As such, they are special. Yet no amount of listening to Anthony Braxton’s For Alto, Ken Vandermark’s Furniture Music or any of David S. Ware’s recent solo excursions could prepare me for the unaccompanied debut of Little Women member Travis Laplante. Heart Protector is a masterpiece that stands out in an already selective field, one that celebrates the creepy noises and spaces between the notes on a saxophone and creates a texture that owes more to Eno than Ewart.

SQUARE PEOPLE saxophonist CRAIG SCHENKER will also perform. Music starts at 8pm on the back porch of Noa Noa. We’re asking for an $8 to $10 donation to the touring musicians. If you consider yourself a fan of the cutting edge, DO NOT MISS THIS!

More details on the Facebook event page. Check out a video of Peter Evans with EVAN PARKER and FURT below. Incredible stuff.

An evening of solo improvisation.

Dual resident of New York City and Nashville BENTON BAINBRIDGE premieres his new video show SUPER LONG PLAY! tomorrow night at Seed Space. For the past two months, ERIN LAW, PERRIN IRELAND, and myself have been working with Benton on an upcoming experimental dance/video/sound performance. (More on that soon.) His low-fi experimental video work is nothing short of inspiring!

Of the new exhibit, Benton says,

“Super Long Play!” is an electronic sketchbook of 50 VHS T-15 tapes I made in the past two weeks here in Nashville along with my collaborators Erin Law, Perrin Ireland, Tony Youngblood, Ryan Hogan, Johnny Invective, and my 6 year old son Ezra Bainbridge-Powers.

I collaborated with Benton on 6 or so tapes, and it was a blast! I won’t reveal what we did. You’ll have to check it out for yourself.

How do you experience the tapes? You pick one up and pop it in the lone tv/vcr combo at the gallery. It’s that simple! To view a tape with a particular collaborator, hunt for the tapes with that person’s signature.

The Nashville Scene’s Jack Silverman interviewed Benton about SLP! and remembering Adam Yauch from the Beastie Boys. It’s essential reading. Check it out here.

Reception is Saturday, May 12th from 6pm to 9pm at Seed Space, located in Chestnut Studios, 427 Chestnut St, Nashville, TN.

Shane Harrison – Absinthe

If you were at the Gallery F closing party, you may have witnessed the preview of the new project by JJ JONES THE HUMAN SNOWGLOBE, MIKE HIEGEMANN, and STIJN SMEETS : POPCOLLAGE. They only performed one song, a mashup of Burning Ring of Fire and Burning Down the House called The Fire Trilogy. (Theatre Intangible recorded it. Check it out here.) People went crazy over it!

I got to listen to PopCollage practice in my basement. The music is absurdist, brilliant, and completely sincere. Now, you have a chance to witness their first full concert, Thursday, May 3rd at Chestnut Studios.

Here’s the letter JJ sent me:

Greetings!

A new project PopCollage will play in Nashville Thursday May 3, 2012 at 7:30.

At my wife Sabine Schlunk’s studio on Chestnut Avenue near Sounds Stadium. (directions below).

PopCollage is completely improvised with electronic beats and electric bass (Mike Hiegemann, Bochum DE) and classical violin (Stijn Smeets, Brussels BE) and the vocals of JJ Jones (Nashville/Munich).

We weave improvised sounds with famous lyrics from the popular music of history (with recognizable and unrecognizable melodies),as well as parts of fairy tales and famous lines from films.

Please join us. It will be fun.

Location: Chestnut studios are in an old brick factory near the railroad tracks ACROSS FROM 452 Chestnut St. Nashville around the corner from Sounds Stadium. The studio is on the main floor ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE END OF THE HALL.

World music superstar guitarist BOMBINO from Agadez, Niger will perform in Nashville on Tuesday, May 1st at the VFW Post 1970! I really have to hand it to CHRIS DAVIS for continuing to organize amazing nights of music in Nashville. Also performing are THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS, and WILLIAM TYLER.

From the Facebook event page:

Bombino’s electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page.

From Bombino’s Wikipedia page:

Bombino was born in Tidene, Niger, a Tuareg encampment outside of Agadez. Following the outbreak of the Tuareg Rebellion in 1990, Bombino, along with his father and grandmother, were forced to flee to neighboring Algeria for safety. By 1997, Bombino had returned to Agadez and began life as a professional musician.

Filmmaker Hisham Mayet managed to track down and record Bombino and his electric band in 2007 during a wedding performance. Those recordings, along with several acoustic performances in the ‘dry guitar’ style, can be heard on the Sublime Frequencies’ 2009 release, “Group Bombino – Guitars from Agadez, vol. 2.” Later in 2007, tensions grew again in Niger and ultimately erupted into another Tuareg Rebellion. The government, hoping to thwart the rebellion in all its forms, banned guitars for the Tuareg, as the instrument was seen as a symbol of rebellion. Additionally, two of Bombino’s fellow musicians were executed, thus forcing him into exile.

In January 2010 Bombino was able to return to his home in Agadez. So as to celebrate the end of the conflict, a large concert was organized at the base of the Grand Mosque in Agadez, having received the blessing of the Sultan. Bombino and his band played to over a thousand people at the concert, all dancing and celebrating the end of their struggle.

While Bombino lived in exile in Burkina Faso, filmmaker Ron Wyman, having heard cassette recordings of his music, decided to track him down. Wyman encouraged Bombino to properly record his music. Bombino agreed, and the two of them produced an album together in Agadez. The recordings culminated in his album Agadez, released in April, 2011 which debuted at the top of the iTunes World Chart.
