Open Lot Nashville continues to provide innovative and challenging entertainment with Friday night’s Translation exhibit and the mesmerizing lutist Jozef van Wissem.  Friends of Theatre Intangible Ezzy Harrold, Charlie Rauh, Declan Gould, Matt Jernigan, Richard Harper, and Drew Maynard are participating in Translation.

I would write more, but I have to hightail it over to Zeitgeist Art Gallery to see the afore-mentioned Charlie Rauh and Ezzy Harrold perform a guitar/dance duet.  If you can make it there by 6pm, then meet me!

This has been an insanely busy past few weeks for me, and with the Nashville Film Festival next week, the crunch just continues.  I’ve reviewed 5 films of the festival for the Nashville Scene.  Look for my reviews in this Thursday’s edition.  Hopefully, I’ll have some time to write up my must-see list on this blog tomorrow.

From Open Lot’s press release:

Translation (4.16.10, 6-9pm)

Curated by Meagan Rust + Richard Harper

The goal of Translation is to highlight the process of interpretation from textual to visual, and from visual to textual. A dialogue between visual artists and writers, the show will explore how different types of art can influence and interact with each other.

The curators of Translation have selected two poems, a sculpture, and a painting that are included in the show.  Visual artists were asked to create a response or interpretation to one of the written pieces, and writers are asked to create a response or interpretation to one of the visual pieces.  Translation features artwork and performance by James Perrin, Lauren Youngling, Charlie Rauh + Megan Harrold (Cultural Reflex Dance), James Ford, Jonathan Lisenby, Matt Jernigan, Sara Figel, Angelica Paige Ridley, Todd Hogue, and Meagan Rust, with prose and poetry by Jeff Hardin, Richard Harper, Claudia Overstreet, Declan Gould, Drew Maynard, Laura Elizabeth Faison, and Scott Metzger.

The opening reception is April 16th from 6-9pm, with an after party following.  Translation continues Saturday, April 17th from noon to 5pm.

Wine and beer will be served with ID.  This is an all-ages and free event occurring at Open Lot Nashville.

Jozef van Wissem (4.16.10, 9pm-12am)

Jozef van Wissem
Robbie Lee + Che Chen
Heresie Of The Free Spirit

Open Lot presents Dutch composer and lutist Jozef van Wissem, celebrated for his integration of classical pieces, musical palindromes, electronic improvisation, and field recordings into elegiac masterpieces.

” Jozef van Wissem has been slowly reinventing the lute for the last three decades. Among the slew of fast-picking, fancy-fretting guitar players so prevalent today, his lute’s voice is a quiet oasis, and Stations of the Cross a small masterpiece .” – The Wire

“Dutch lutist Jozef van Wissem catches his own reflection in tender, minimalist picking and gold-spray overdubs.” – Rolling Stone Magazine

This event occurs at Open Lot Nashville, 9-11pm, April 16th.  Admission price is $10.00 at the door or $15.00 with open bar (ID required).
