Instrument-maker, circuit-bender, ambient musician and one of the coolest people on the planet Tim Kaiser is returning to Noa Noa on Saturday, June 29th for a very special performance. He’ll be in the area for the Louisville Experimental Festival. We’re very fortunate that he agreed to make a stop in Nashville.

You NEED to be at this show. I know I say that a lot, but seriously. This time. NEED.

Who is Tim Kaiser?

Tim Kaiser is well known in the atmospheric experimental music scene for his blending of acousto-electric contraptions and Frankenstein electronics to create ethereal, layered drones. His sonic landscapes have been called “experiments in adventurous art” and “eclectic genius” by the likes of Make Magazine, Wired, the New Art Examiner and the Associated Press. Mr. Kaiser was featured on the PBS program MakeTV and has headlined numerous experimental music festivals in the US.

Check out his appearance on MakeTV where he discusses his instrument building:

Incredibly cool.

This will be the fourth in a new series of experimental concerts at Noa Noa. The theme for the night is “Inner Space — three acts building their own private fantasy world through instrument design, hardware hacking, and music. ”

Dylan Simon & Amy Blackburn Simon will blend voice, synthesizer, and hurdy gurdy into a tapestry-gilded gateway to the dream world.

Devin Bell (Blight Side of Life) will harness the power of audience smart phones and use them as multi-channel speakers in which to broadcast his circuit-bent drone set. That’s right, your phones are the speakers!

Incidentally, all three acts are Circuit Benders’ Ball alums.

More info on the Facebook event page. Don’t miss this very special show!

Suspended by Aric Vance (EBNC)

This Friday if you’re not attending that obscure little music festival in the backwoods of Tennessee, consider coming to Noa Noa for an evening of experimental music.

The theme of Noa Noa Experimental Series #3 is “Loops & Bends,” three artists exploring circuit bending, sound collage, and creative looping.

Asheville, North Carolina’s EBNC (Aric Vance) headlines the evening. Aric last played Nashville at Betty’s Bar & Grill, and he was absolutely amazing. If you attended the 2012 Circuit Benders’ Ball Nashville, you saw Aric’s hypnotic video art, which explores extreme video compression, keyframe dumping, and frame concatenation. EBNC’s bio promises “an unusual mix of field recordings, samples, modular DSP programming, and hand-built/modified electronic instruments/effects to create a sound that ranges from a soothing, ambient wash to extremely harsh noise.”

Next up is Workshoppe Radio Phonik, the joint project of Pimpdaddysupreme and Matt the PM. They last worked together for Noa Noa Experimental Series #2 where Matt the PM projected live visuals as Pimpdaddysupreme played warped records on 6 simultaneous turntables. Matt took the board audio from that performance, recreated the visuals, and posted the results as a brilliant Youtube video. Matt and Pimpdaddysupreme also appeared together on this Theatre Intangible podcast.

Rounding out the bill is Adventure Bomb aka Tony Youngblood aka me. It’s my scoop & loop / arrhythmic sampling / circuit-bending project. Check out these two Adventure Bomb sets: Forecasting and Adventure Bomb Halloween Special.

More info on the Facebook event page. Hope to see you at Noa Noa on Friday!

Kyle Baker from Soundcrawl is borrowing Theatre Intangible H.Q. (that is, Noa Noa) tonight for a viewing party of highlights from the New Dischord Festival. As I blogged about here, New Dischord is a multi-day experimental arts festival in Chattanooga, TN. Kyle videotaped portions of the fest, and tonight, he’ll present the highlights in my living room. He’ll also be sharing some juicy details about Soundcrawl 2013.

Things go down at 7pm and should be over by 8:30 at the latest. Yes, I know the Game of Thrones finale is at 8. That’s what HBOGo is for.

More details on the Facebook event page.

Stephen Molyneux, founder of No Kings Records, member of Horsehair Everywhere and Theatre Intangible participant, is performing tonight at Noa Noa in support of his new album “Called to Leave.” Unlike Molyneux’s recent experimental releases, this one is a collection of songs.

As NoKingsRecords.co states,

This world traveler, professional gardener, poet, amateur ethnomusicologist, and No Kings co-founder has, at long last, collected his best song pieces (which move in and out of traditional American folk motifs) into a heart-shaking and catchy album. From murder ballad to chord organ interlude, themes of water and work, these atmospheric one-mic recordings of Stephen’s magnetic voice vibrating the floorboards of his Nashville home overflow with emotion and will have you hitting that rewind button over and over. The best. Edition of 100 pro-dubbed chrome, imprinted tapes, risograph artwork. For your convenience, you can stream the whole thing here.

Also performing is one of my favorite Nashville artists, Renee-Louise Carafice. In the 2011 Nashville Scene Rock n’ Roll Poll, I selected her as my favorite discovery of the year. This will be Renee-Louise’s first show with a full band in Nashville. Square People Jazz Maturity’s Tommy Stangroom will be on the drums.

Last but not least is Churchyard, the new garage rock band composed of Alice Buchanan, Rebecca Cholewa, Meghan D’Amico and Rachel Warrick.

Check out videos of Stephen and Renee at the end of this post.
