It’s the Great Podcast Releasathon 2012!(tm) this week at Theatre Intangible, a glorious celebration with a new podcast each day! Actually, I made that up. I’m just way behind on my release schedule, I had several old episodes ready to go, and I thought a fancy name would make it appear as if it were intentional.

We kicked off the festivities yesterday with Catharsirator from the WIDB era.

Today’s release is podcast 86: A Wild Snore, featuring Gordon Roque on melodica and vocals; Melody Holt on vocals and musical saw; Cody Bottoms on vocals; myself on musical saw; Anderson Cook on guitar and chaos pad; Randy Hunt on double bass; and Lawrence Crow on keyboards, Theremin, and Supercollider / Puredata programming. I did the live mixing, editing, and mastering. A Wild Snore was the 18th episode of the WRVU era of Theatre Intangible, recorded August 17th, 2008. It’s still one of my favorites.

Kandinsky “Several Circles”

Today’s episode Knocking Space saved Theatre Intangible. It was August 2009, and Theatre Intangible just got banned from WRVU radio for the episode Get It On With Dave Cloud. We had no home. Everything was in limbo. I didn’t know what to do. I only knew that we had to keep recording, keep the momentum. So on 8/2/2009, eleven of us piled into my basement, armed with accordions, saxophones, trumpets, tubas, windsticks, harmonicas, toy flutes, real flutes, melodicas, shop vacs, air pianos, and voices; turned on the reel to reel; and kept Theatre Intangible alive.

With no place to broadcast the episode, I released it as a Mediafire download on our now-defunct Myspace page and kept recording new shows. In December of 2009, we premiered the podcast and website TheatreIntangible.com. Knocking Space remained unreleased in podcast form until now.

The episode was original titled On Air Volume 2, named after the first all-wind instrument improv, On Air. (Check it out here.)

Knocking Space features Charlie Rauh, Chris Rauh, Jamison Sevitts, Joe Hudson, Craig Schenker, Pimpdaddysupreme, Dave Maddox, Melody Holt, Gordon Roque, and Anthony William Herndon. I did the live mixing, some editing, and post production. This was the first thing I ever recorded on my Tascam 80-8 ½ reel to reel tape machine. We recorded in four 15-minute increments, mixing live, using two left/right tracks for each section.

It was November 4th, 2007, and I stood in the WRVU on-air studios with a few friends, laying out slide whistles, balloons, air pianos, and other instruments for the evening’s improv.  Theatre Intangible was about to do its second WRVU live improv, On Air, a treatise on . . . erm . . . air, made exclusively on air instruments (get it?).  This show stars Cody Bottoms and Lola Wilson from A Parade, Gordon Roque, Melody Holt, and myself.  This show is particularly haunting, due in large part to Lola’s bellowing, enigmatic vocal air instrument.  Last year, we did an “On Air Volume 2.”  Look for that episode on this podcast very soon.  For now, here’s the original.  Enjoy.

Turn the Page featuring Cody Bottoms, Lola Wilson, Gordon Roque, Melody Holt, JJ Jones, Kri, and 24-7.  Originally broadcast on WRVU 01/13/2008.

The idea behind Turn the Page was simple.  Six vocalists were presented with a group of index cards.  Each card had a specific instruction for something to do with their voice.  The card might say, “bark like a dog,” or, “speak German in a sinister voice.”  The card might even say, “Pick up the cd player headphones and hum the melody line you hear.”  (Before the show, I had recorded a few instrumentals using a Casio SK-1 keyboard.)

What results is one of our most entertaining episodes to date and by far the fan favorite.  Turn the Page features the vocal talents of The Human Snowglobe JJ Jones, Lola Wilson and Cody Bottoms from A Parade, Kri, Melody Holt, Gordon Roque, and 24-7 from the Billy Goats for a brief moment at the end.  Right before the show, you’ll hear an unreleased Theatre Intangible promo the band Call It Anything created when they were on the show for an artist showcase.  The background music in the intro is from an episode called Blue Green Black.  We’ll release both in the coming months.
