I’ve got a Neil Young concert to attend in 10 minutes, so I’m going to have to make this quick.  There is an absolutely amazing set of bands playing at Betty’s tonight.  If you’re not going to see Neil Young, then you have no excuse to not attend.  The lineup is:

Betty’s Bar & Grill, 9pm, $5 to $7 donation to the touring bands
Screwed Anthologies
The Jon Kemmerer Quartet
Hobbledeions (Scott Martin)
Xists
RJ Remington

Houston-based Screwed Anthologies is a trombone and lap steel duo that builds evolving tape loops out of the tapes collection of legendary DJ in the Houston hip hop scene DJ Screw.  This performance is not to be missed!

Jon Kemmerer Quartet is a project of Theatre Intangible player Dylan Simon.  Xists is a project of T.I. player Joe Hudson and his brother Terry.  RJ Remington makes bizarre monologues about super heroes.  Hobbledeions is the project of hopefully soon-to-be T.I. participant Scott Martin, of Forrest Bride and countless other great Nashville bands.  I’ll be high-tailing it over to Betty’s tonight after the Neil Young show to catch as much of this as I can.  Special thanks to Chris Davis and Dylan Simon for the heads up about this.  Hope to see you there!

  • I dunno– I’d probably miss Neil Young for the Screwed Anthologies– that sounds like a pretty interesting project. Reading about it, I’m not certain it’s a band… might be more of a series of presentations by different folks. Regardless, I’d be very interested to hear what they’re doing. I usually start listening to my DJ Screw stuff in the fall when I can have some long periods of uninterrupted listening. 7 hours of mixtapes gets me into a whole different mindset!

  • As it happens, I was able to see them both. Screwed Anthologies put on a pretty amazing set, as did Scott Martin’s solo project. Maybe a Screwed Anthologies podcast is in the future. . .

Unfortunately Neil Young ended too late to see the first three bands. I’m really excited to see Dylan and Joe’s new projects in the future though.

The downside of the back to back concerts is that I got 5 hours sleep. 🙁

  • Ha! You beat me by two hours sleep– I finished production on a set of three “Sounds Like Radio” episodes last night at WSIU, and apparently was using the slowest computer on the planet. Turns out it was backing up a RAID array, or whatever you call it… it was like chopped-and-screwed computing, haha.

Anywho, the first in this series airs this coming Sunday morning. The theme is timelessness, repetition, and change. Heavy stuff!

    How was Neil Young? Setlist?
