Now that I finally have some free time on my hands, I’m releasing all the podcasts that have been patiently waiting in the queue. Here’s episode 94: Softly, Gently, starring Jesse Kenas Collins, Lawrence Crow, Brady Sharp, Stephen Molyneux and Jeremy Bennett, recorded on June 08^th,2012 at Noa Noa.

Boston experimental multi-instrumentalist Jesse Kenas Collins came to Noa Noa last year to perform a bill with keyboardist Lawrence Crow and guitarist Brady Sharp. See an excerpt of Jesse’s solo performance in the video below. After their respective sets, they combined with Horsehair Everywhere‘s Stephen Molyneux and Lyrebird’s Jeremy Bennett to perform this textural improv. I did the recording, live mixing, editing, and mastering. Thanks for listening!

Noa Noa house is back from a long winter break with our first spring show, Saturday, March 30th at 8:30pm.

We’re kicking off a new experimental series featuring three innovative acts: Lyrebird (Jeremy Bennett & Craig Schenker), Brady Sharp, and Age (Josh Gumiela & Luke Rainey).

All three artists use live sampling and computer processing to continually evolve an improvisational set, never being completely sure where the ping pong between acoustic instrument and electronic modification will take them.

All have appeared on Theatre Intangible at one point or another. Check out Lyrebird’s improv set recorded at Theatre Intangible / Noa Noa headquarterers, Brady Sharp’s work in this T.I. “all guitars” episode, and the Josh Gumiela / Luke Rainey improv featured in the video below. Josh and Luke’s partnership is especially interesting because they start with a single sample and toss it back and forth throughout the set, further manipulating and transforming it, having no idea where it will lead.

Lyrebird
is a new project by electronic artist Jeremy Bennett (SAURuS, Santa’s Workshop) and saxophonist Craig Schenker (Square People Jazz Maturity, Arclyte, Cenobium). Jeremy live samples Craig’s saxophone playing and intermixes field recordings, electronics and samples while Craig improvises new sounds in response to Jeremy’s processing.

Brady Sharp
discovered improvised music in the mid-90s, and has had the fortune of playing with the reputable likes of Peter Kowald, Chris Cutler, LaDonna Smith, Gino Robair, Susan Alcorn, Tatsuya Nakatani and many others. He plays prepared electric guitar using extended techniques with various found objects. This will be the debut of him incorporating PureData live audio processing software into his setup.

Age
is a horizontal sound composition process by Josh Gumiela and Luke Rainey, based in Nashville, TN. They begin each session with the same palette of samples. One player samples the arrangement and adds new flourishes to the mix. The original player samples him, and continues the shaping process. The process remains constant, but the resulting compositions are always very different.

I’m short on time at the moment, but I wanted to post something quick about Thursday’s Zeitgeist Indeterminacies with LaDonna Smith and Davey Williams. It’s a can’t miss!

Here’s what moderator Brady Sharp had to say about the show over at Voight-Kampff Music:

Davey Williams started playing guitar at age 12. Throughout college, he played in a number of jazz and soul bands. Davey went on to join Curlew in the late 80s, led by saxohonist George Cartwright, and whose revolving membership included Fred Frith, Bill Laswell, and Tom Cora among many others. Curlew, along with Last Exit, Naked City, and others were one of the seminal bands to form the “Knitting Factory Sound” in New York.

Since Curlew, Davey has been in many punk rock and improvisational groups, and worked extensively with drummer Ikue Mori and the legendary Col. Bruce Hampton, ret., among many other. He’s also a freelance writer and music critic.

LaDonna Smith is a classically-trained violinist, violist, pianist, and music educator. She’s performed since 1974 with such notables as Davey Williams, Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Jack Wright, Toshi Makihara, and countless others throughout the years. She’s toured extensively around North America, Europe, Russia and Siberia, China, and Japan.

LaDonna is the Director of the Birmingham Suzuki Violin Association, on Faculty at the Central Pennsylvania Suzuki Institute, is a current adviser for the International Society of Improvised Music, and publisher/editor-at-large for The Improvisor: the Journal for Improvised Music, started with Davey in the mid 70s, and continuing to this day on the web. She is an active organizer of concerts and festivals in the Birmingham area.

LaDonna and Davey met at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and they fell into a crowd which included Craig Nutt(now in Nashville). They proceeded to create their own form of music based on Dada, Surrealism, and experimental ideas in general. What came out of that was a live album called “Raudelunas Pataphysical Revue” by Ron ‘Pate and the Debonairs, featuring the Reverend Fred Lane, a strong concoction of meandering big band music, free improvisation, and industrial noise, combined with surreal Vaudevillian wisecracks and soliloquies. They soon discovered Derek Bailey’s “Topography of the Lungs”, FMP Records, and the whole European Free Improvisation movement that was developing simultaneously in Europe as they were. They formed their own record label TransMuseq, and they put on many surrealist theater and other events in the Birmingham area, forming long term relationships with similar artists around the world, and they toured the world together for many years as the Trans Duo.

It’s always a special treat to see these two improvising jewels of the south play together. Expect lots of humor, storytelling, and amazing extended instrument technique, followed by the usual insightful discussions that “Indeterminacies” offers.

Watch the video below and prepare to be amazed. Then come watch Bostonian JESSE KENAS-COLLINS in person at Noa Noa this Friday. That’s all I’ll say. The video speaks for itself.

Theatre Intangible participant BRADY SHARP will also perform an experimental set on modified guitar. Other surprise guests may also appear and perform. (Probably not Jack White.)
