The Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood is kicking off a new monthly art crawl, beginning Saturday, August 3rd from 5:30pm to 11pm. I’m teaming up with Mike Kluge (Future Night at Boheme Collectif) to curate an electronic art exhibition at the SNAP Center called “ON/OFF.”

The art community centered around Chestnut Street (near Greer Stadium) has long been one of Nashville’s best kept secrets. The Saturday art crawl is a great opportunity to tour wonderful spaces such as music producer Lonie John Hutchin’s new Cleft Studios, world famous Infinity Cat Records, community makerspace Fort Houston, and galleries such as Ground Floor Gallery, Ovvio Arte, Seed Space, Track One and Zeitgeist Gallery.

For our ON/OFF exhibition at SNAP Center, Mike and I called upon members of the circuit bending and electronic music and art communities to show off  interactive installations, reactive video, sound sculptures, flashing lights and things that go buzz.

There will be two live performances. At 7pm and 9pm, artist David Wright LaGrone will perform live dynamic video art with guitar pedals and the Hard Soft Synth 3jb, an innovative lo-fi video synthesizer from Bleep Labs.  At 8pm and 10pm, artist and Watkins professor Morgan Higby Flowers will perform realtime audio visuals using a no-input system. The output ranges from dirt-filthy, loud, and stroboscopic to soft, rhyth-matic NTSC rivers.

The participating artists include:

  • Zach Adams
  • Brains Bailey
  • Benton Bainbridge
  • Lawrence Crow
  • Josh Gumiela
  • Linda Heck
  • Morgan Higby-Flowers
  • David Wright LaGrone
  • Andrew Morill
  • Adrienne Outlaw
  • Luke Rainey
  • Stan Richardson
  • Liz Clayton Scofield
  • Derek Schartung
  • Russell White

(Artist list is subject to change.)

This should be a fun show! Check out previews of Adrienne Outlaw‘s and Zach Adams‘ works below.

And be sure to check out all the other great gallery exhibits.

Here’s episode 99: Tau Ceti, starring Mike Simpkins, Josh Gumiela and Luke Rainey, recorded May 25th 2012 on the back porch of Noa Noa.

Minneapolis-based ambient electronic artist Mike Simpkins was in town to perform a concert at Noa Noa under his moniker Kendall Station. You can see an excerpt from his performance in the video below.  Also on the bill were Luke Rainey’s project Grand Reality and Josh Gumiela’s project Foster Dad. Josh organized the show.

After their sets, they performed this beautiful improv, awash in analogue synths, circuit-bent gear, and field recordings. I did the live mixing, editing, and mastering. Thanks for listening.

reprocess

Noa Noa house is back from a long winter break with our first spring show, Saturday, March 30th at 8:30pm.

We’re kicking off a new experimental series featuring three innovative acts: Lyrebird (Jeremy Bennett & Craig Schenker), Brady Sharp, and Age (Josh Gumiela & Luke Rainey).

All three artists use live sampling and computer processing to continually evolve an improvisational set, never being completely sure where the ping pong between acoustic instrument and electronic modification will take them.

All have appeared on Theatre Intangible at one point or another. Check out Lyrebird’s improv set recorded at Theatre Intangible / Noa Noa headquarterers, Brady Sharp’s work in this T.I. “all guitars” episode, and the Josh Gumiela / Luke Rainey improv featured in the video below. Josh and Luke’s partnership is especially interesting because they start with a single sample and toss it back and forth throughout the set, further manipulating and transforming it, having no idea where it will lead.

All this is happening in the Noa Noa basement. Park in the front yard and surrounding business lots. More info on the Facebook event page. Stay in touch with all the Noa Noa happenings by “liking” our Noa Noa Facebook page.

Lyrebird
is a new project by electronic artist Jeremy Bennett (SAURuS, Santa’s Workshop) and saxophonist Craig Schenker (Square People Jazz Maturity, Arclyte, Cenobium). Jeremy live samples Craig’s saxophone playing and intermixes field recordings, electronics and samples while Craig improvises new sounds in response to Jeremy’s processing.

_____________________________

Brady Sharp
discovered improvised music in the mid-90s, and has had the fortune of playing with the reputable likes of Peter Kowald, Chris Cutler, LaDonna Smith, Gino Robair, Susan Alcorn, Tatsuya Nakatani and many others. He plays prepared electric guitar using extended techniques with various found objects. This will be the debut of him incorporating PureData live audio processing software into his setup.

Age
is a horizontal sound composition process by Josh Gumiela and Luke Rainey, based in Nashville, TN. They begin each session with the same palette of samples. One player samples the arrangement and adds new flourishes to the mix. The original player samples him, and continues the shaping process. The process remains constant, but the resulting compositions are always very different.

Kendall Station

It’s fitting that today’s Google Doodle is a playable, multi-track recordable Moog synthesizer in honor of Bob Moog’s 78th birthday. I was just using the search engine to look up information about KENDALL STATION, a Minneapolis electronic artist who loves analog synths. He’s playing Noa Noa this Friday. As his bio reads, “Delving always deeper into the geekery of analog synths and visions of a cybernetic future, he still brings an element and humanity and nostalgia to his work.”

Come celebrate Bob Moog’s birthday with a night full of synth-filled music. Also on the bill are Luke Rainey’s circuit-bent project GRAND REALITY and TI Participant FOSTER DAD.

Show starts at 8pm on the back porch of Noa Noa house. $5 cover to the touring band. Bring your friends. Bring refreshments. Bring a lawn chair.
