Professors Morgan Higby-Flowers and Josh Gumiela are organizing a NO MEDIA event for the Clarksville First Thursday Art Walk, and they’re seeking participants. The event is presented by the Austin Peay State University Department of Art. Morgan is a former APSU professor who currently teaches at Watkins University. Josh is a professor in the APSU Department of Art. Check out the APSU press release.

NO MEDIA is an open improvisational realtime/performance media art event conceptualized by Jason SolidayNick Briz and Jeff Kolar.

The concept:

Participating artists are randomly matched in sets of 3 && given 10mins to perform. NO MEDIA aims to bring together artists from a broad range of performable disciplines (poets + dancers + expanded cinemaistas + free jazzers + audio/video noise makers + etc) to challenge the conventions of their practice by responding in realtime to artists from other disciplines.

The Rules:

No Media At The Beginning!
[NO preparation is allowed. Bring your tools, devices, instruments, props, etc., but you’ve got to start with a blank slate. NO time will be allotted for ‘setup’. There will be a 2min turn around time where you can carry your stuff up and meet your collaborators]

No Media At The End!
[NO documentation allowed. It happens once && in realtime.]

The event happens Thursday, September 5th from 6-8pm.  The venue address is:124 Strawberry Alley Clarksville, TN 37040.

The Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood is kicking off a new monthly art crawl, beginning Saturday, August 3rd from 5:30pm to 11pm. I’m teaming up with Mike Kluge (Future Night at Boheme Collectif) to curate an electronic art exhibition at the SNAP Center called “ON/OFF.”

The art community centered around Chestnut Street (near Greer Stadium) has long been one of Nashville’s best kept secrets. The Saturday art crawl is a great opportunity to tour wonderful spaces such as music producer Lonie John Hutchin’s new Cleft Studios, world famous Infinity Cat Records, community makerspace Fort Houston, and galleries such as Ground Floor Gallery, Ovvio Arte, Seed Space, Track One and Zeitgeist Gallery.

For our ON/OFF exhibition at SNAP Center, Mike and I called upon members of the circuit bending and electronic music and art communities to show off  interactive installations, reactive video, sound sculptures, flashing lights and things that go buzz.

There will be two live performances. At 7pm and 9pm, artist David Wright LaGrone will perform live dynamic video art with guitar pedals and the Hard Soft Synth 3jb, an innovative lo-fi video synthesizer from Bleep Labs.  At 8pm and 10pm, artist and Watkins professor Morgan Higby Flowers will perform realtime audio visuals using a no-input system. The output ranges from dirt-filthy, loud, and stroboscopic to soft, rhyth-matic NTSC rivers.

The participating artists include:

  • Zach Adams
  • Brains Bailey
  • Benton Bainbridge
  • Lawrence Crow
  • Josh Gumiela
  • Linda Heck
  • Morgan Higby-Flowers
  • David Wright LaGrone
  • Andrew Morill
  • Adrienne Outlaw
  • Luke Rainey
  • Stan Richardson
  • Liz Clayton Scofield
  • Derek Schartung
  • Russell White

(Artist list is subject to change.)

This should be a fun show! Check out previews of Adrienne Outlaw‘s and Zach Adams‘ works below.

And be sure to check out all the other great gallery exhibits.

Calling all new media artists! I’m partnering with Mike Kluge (Future Night at Boheme Collectif) to curate an electronic art show during the August 3rd Wedgewood-Houston Art Crawl. The event is Wedgewood- Houston’s big push into the First Saturday art events. Participating galleries include Fort Houston, Zeitgeist Gallery, threesquared, Seed Space, the SNAP Building and Ovvio Arte.

Mike and I are curating a one-night show at the SNAP Building (South Nashville Action People), culminating with a performance by Watkins professor Morgan Higby-Flowers. Many thanks to Ryan Schemmel at Fort Houston for sponsoring our curation.

We’re now accepting exhibit submissions. We’re looking for interactive installations, circuit-bent gear, reactive video and sound sculptures, flashing lights and things that go buzz. Since the event is coming up so soon, we’re especially interested in work that’s ready to go. You can exhibit multiple works, and it’s ok if the works have been previously exhibited. This show is free and open to the public.

To submit, send an e-mail at tony@theatreintangible.com and tell me your name, exhibition ideas and any relevant links.

The gallery will be up from 6pm to 11pm on Saturday, August 3rd. Load in begins at 5pm and ends at 6pm. That’s not much set up time, so we encourage work that is easy to install.

Future Night Flyer Boheme Collectif

Mike Kluge’s FUTURE NIGHT this Friday at Boheme Collectif promises to the best of the series so far. Of particular interest to Theatre Intangible listeners and Circuit Benders’ Ball fans is the Electric Petting Zoo, an interactive art gallery from Noon to 6pm.

The petting zoo features T.I. participants and Benders’ Ball alums such as Andrew Morrill, Zach Adams, Josh Gumiela, and Morgan Higby-Flowers. Here’s the full list of interactive artist:

  • Zach Adams (CMKT4, Nashville Robotic Philharmonic): Circuit-bent installation.
  • Brains Bayley: Trippy kaleidoscope installation.
  • Tyler Blankenship: Large silver sound-and-light emitting pyramid.
  • Josh Gumiela: Interactive audio/visual install. Mike Kluge says, “Trust me, you will want to see it!”
  • Linda Heck : Something involving mics inserted into stuffed animals.
  • Morgan Higby-Flowers: I’m not sure what he has planned for the installation, but if it’s as half as cool as what he did at Noa Noa Experimental Series #2, then I’m sold.
  • Andrew Morrill (Brain Lesion): Noise circuits.
  • Russ White: Reactive sound-and-color organ.

At 8pm the music begins, featuring Sacramento, California band Pregnant. This band is doing extremely innovative things under the guise of pop music, and I can’t wait to see them live. Check out their video below. They remind me a bit of Bird NamestUnE-yArDs, and Solex.

Also on the bill is the aforementioned Morgan Higby-Flowers and master DJ / friend of Theatre Intangible Quiet Entertainer.
