Tim Kaiser returns to Nashville for concert and electronic workshop, Friday at Make Nashville

Tim Kaiser, maker supreme, ambient maestro, and two-time Circuit Benders’ Ball performer, is returning to Nashville on Friday, April 14th to perform a special set at Make Nashville. On Saturday afternoon, he will lead a piezoelectric pick-up workshop.

Based out of Duluth, Minnesota, Tim creates his own instruments out of thrift store finds, children’s musical toys, automotive parts, and in a few cases, snow plows! He plucks, bows, loops, and bends the instruments into melodic, otherworldly ambient music. This profile by Make TV is a great introduction:

Opening the Friday evening show is Nashville keyboardist and circuit bender No Stress (Paul Horton). Paul plays in the jazz duo Concurrence and is a touring member of the Alabama Shakes. As the solo act No Stress, Paul uses circuit-bent toys, keyboards, and looping pedals to make music unlike anything you’ve heard.

Saturday afternoon from 12pm to 3pm, Tim Kaiser will lead a workshop on making piezoelectric pick-ups, the very same kind he puts in his kalimbas and bowed instruments.

Our house venue Noa Noa opens its doors again (temporarily) on Tuesday, June 9th at 9:30pm to host the triumphant return of instrument designer, circuit bender, and ambient composer Tim Kaiser. Also performing are fellow Circuit Benders’ Ball alums Carl Oliver (improvised Eurorack synthesis) and Brady Sharp (PureData-manipulated guitar). Don’t miss it! The chances to see a show at Noa Noa are few and far between. Come to think of it, we need to clean the basement.

Ok folks, here’s another must-see FMRL Arts show. Paul Metzger is a Minneapolis-based guitar, banjo, violin, and anything-with-strings improviser and instrument maker. Hearing him perform on his modified string instruments is, as FMRL Arts’ says on the Facebook event page, “nothing short of sublime.” Tim Kaiser is a Duluth-based instrument maker, circuit bender, and ambient experimental musician. He last passed through Nashville for the 2014 Circuit Benders’ Ball. Paul and Tim are two of the most creative musicians on the scene, and the opportunities to see them together are rare. The only time they played Nashville on the same bill (that I know of) was a 2012 performance at Noa Noa house on Halloween night. That was one of my favorite shows of my life. Don’t miss this one!

Chris Davis and Tate Eskew’s experimental arts organization FMRL Arts recently announced their fall lineup, and it’s spectacular. The season kicks off with Michael Chapman and William Tyler on Monday, September 29th. Shows in October and November feature Lakha Khan, Paul Metzger, Tim Kaiser, and “Italian occult psychedelia” band Father Murphy. All shows take place at Emma Bistro located at 11 Lea Avenue, Nashville, TN 37210.
