Gerber & Gerber live at Brick Factory Nashville

Today on the podcast, I interview brothers Tony and Todd Gerber. Tony and Todd have been making music together and separate since they were ages 9 and 3, first in Northern Indiana where they grew up, and later in Nashville, TN.

Tony Gerber wears many hats, including visual artist, virtual reality homesteader, and record label founder; but it’s his contribution to electronic, ambient, and space music that put him on the map. As a solo artist, with his band Spacecraft, and in dozens of other projects, Tony’s music has been featured in movie soundtracks, planetarium shows, and on the NPR program “Hearts of Space.” His alter ego and avatar Cypress Rosewood performs concerts in the virtual reality world of Second Life.

In 1992, Todd Gerber helped establish the Casio SK-1 keyboard as a valid musical instrument in his band UMLAUT with Troy Sharp, long before the instrument achieved cult-cool status. Soon after, he co-founded the bands drrdrr and Dinah Shore, Jr., and with the latter he performed on bills with Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Trey Gunn, The Amazing Delores, and Trans Am.

On May 7th 2012 at Brick Factory Nashville, Tony and Todd performed together for the first time in 9 years as the new project Gerber & Gerber. We play a clip of that performance on this showcase. You can download the full performance for FREE right here: Gerber & Gerber live at Brick Factory Nashville, May 7th, 2012. (Left click to stream, right click to save.)

Todd and Tony will be playing as Gerber & Gerber Friday, August 17th at the Midwest Electro-Music Experience in Indianapolis, Indiana. Tony will also play the festival Saturday, August 18th with Paul Vnuk, Jr.

Todd is performing in Nashville on a bill with tape loop master Jason Lescalleet, Saturday, August 25th at Brick Factory Nashville.

Tony and Todd have been at the heart of the Nashville experimental and electronic music scenes since the late 1980s. I’m incredibly excited to have them on the show!

Mu live at Hive 13, Cincinnati, OH, 2011

After a not-so-brief hiatus, the TI podcast is back with Episode 82: Mu Artist Showcase!

MU is the experimental guitar-based project of Louisville, Kentucky resident DOUGLAS LUCAS. Douglas performed a very visceral set hunched over a modified guitar at Noa Noa on April 13th, 2012.

On the podcast, I talk with Douglas about making music, growing up in a small Kentucky town, and his annual event, the Louisville Experimental Festival, kicking off this year on June 27th. The fest is, as the Facebook page states, “an amalgamation of experimental music,” featuring local and national acts. It’s a major event and close enough for Nashvillians to check out. See below for a full lineup.

The podcast also features Mu’s live performance at Noa Noa, as well as the performance of Louisville tape-loop drone kings ASHOCHIOUS. See below for a video clip.

The April 13th show also featured MICROWAVE WINDOWS and HARDON COLLIDER, who I interviewed for an upcoming podcast. All four bands participated in an incredible live improv to be released soon.

Discussed in this episode: The Peeling Wallpaper Ensemble, The Japanese / American Noise Treaty compilation, Wet, John Cage’s 4’33”, and Mu’s new CD-R release “Meal.”

“The Conglomeration,” James Perrin, Exhibited at Gallery F, Scientists & Artists Picture the Intangible

TWO podcasts in one weekend! Have I gone mad?!? Nope, just trying to catch up.

Here’s podcast 75: SANTA’S WORKSHOP Artist Showcase.

Jeremy Bennett and Grant Parker formed Santa’s Workshop in late 2010 on the campus of University of Tennessee Knoxville. The two friends decided to form a band in order to stretch beyond the creative boundaries of their very different musical backgrounds. Grant’s primary instrument is bass, and he studies jazz and classical performance at UT. Jeremy makes experimental electronic music and plays drums and piano. Their goal with Santa’s Workshop is to establish a cohesive musical dialogue between their two seemingly-unrelated disciplines.

For Santa’s Workshop, Grant performs on guitar and bass, culling feedback from his amplifier and an assortment of pedals and analog devices. Jeremy triggers and manipulates self-recorded audio samples using Ableton Live. Jeremy currently lives in Nashville. Grant lives in Knoxville, two hours away. They tell me the separation is in some ways useful as it keeps each focused on his respective path. Bridging those paths, after all, is what defines Santa’s Workshop.

The performance you’re about to hear was recorded at Gallery F on October 10th 2011 as part of the exhibition Scientists and Artists Picture the Intangible. TIM KAISER, JEREMY WALKER, and CENOBIUM also performed. You can download the Jeremy Walker performance here. Look for the Cenobium audio as an upcoming podcast.

If you like the show, tell a friend or leave us feedback on iTunes. Enjoy!

On September 8th, 2008, I stood in the WRVU master control room next to three completely nude string players. I was more than a little worried that we were going to get kicked off the air. Sure, the web cam had yet to be installed. Sure, there were no “official” clothing policies. Yes, it was 1AM in a deserted building. But this WAS WRVU we were talking about. Board members were scared to death of the FCC, and they exercised the chilling effect with a hypochondriac’s eye for detail.

The avant-jazz improv outfit  CJ BOYD SEXTET (now the KIRTAN CHOIR) were in town for a performance at Cafe Coco. They liked playing nude. Who was I to get in the way? We commandeered the studio at 1am Monday morning to record the very first artist showcase on Theatre Intangible. Regulars Lola Koeune and Melody Holt (The Violet Vixen) joined members CJ Boyd, Lauren Eison, Noah Peacock for the third and final segment. The results are quite beautiful.

And thankfully, we didn’t get kicked off the air. That would come later for Get It On with Dave Cloud.

CJ Boyd later released this session as a cd called Deep in the Outside. The image above is the cover. You can purchase it on the Kirtan Choir Bandcamp page.

Lola Koeune just released a new solo cd titled Ha Na Na Na available on CD Baby and Amazon. I’ve been listening to it nonstop for 2 weeks. It’s by far my favorite release of the year. If there’s one T.I. participant who has the potential for super-stardom, it’s Lola. Do yourself a favor and buy the new cd.

CJ plays bass guitar, harmonica, boomwhackers, beatbox, and sings; Lola sings and plays kalimba; Lauren plays violin and sings; Noah plays the tender train box, other small percussion, acoustic guitar, and sings; Melody Holt sings.
