Mike Teaney’s psychedelic improv series Free Form Friday returns to the Centennial Park Black Box Theatre tonight at 8 p.m. The bill features composer, pianist, and Belmont professor Anthony Belfiglio with his jazz quartet and Parallel Lives, the laptop duo of University of Mississippi professors / Visceralmedia Records co-founders Michael Gardiner and John Latartara.

Gardiner’s Ole Miss profile page gives us some background on the project, which sounds amazing:

As a member of the laptop duo Parallel Lives (with John Latartara), he explores intersections between canonic repertoires and electronics. The group recently released Beethoven Hammerklavier on Centaur Records, a collaboration relying solely on performances by pianists, Beethoven samples, and ambient recordings made at a conservatory of music to create a view of the musical work documented in all of its stages; from discussion, to the practice room, recording studio and concert hall, to its final confrontation with software applications that threaten its identity.

Modular Art Pods participants Dig Deep Light Show will provide the visuals. And just like all Free Form Friday events, it’s free!

Another packed weekend! On Friday, October 10th at 8 p.m. Free Form Friday returns to the Centennial Black Box Theatre. This one features Louisville, Kentucky loop-pedal melodist Cher Von and Nashville jazz improv duo Concurrence. Both have appeared on Theatre Intangible in the past. Check out Cher Von on this episode and Concurrence on this one. Dig Deep Light Show and Devin Lamp will provide the visuals.

Concurrence keyboardist Paul Horton has been performing in the Alabama Shakes touring band lately. Last month, they performed at Nashville’s Loveless Barn, and the concert was taped for the public television series Live from the Artists Den. The special will premiere in 2015.

Also on Friday, FMRL Arts is presenting An Evening with Lakha Khan, 9 p.m. at Emma Bistro. Lakha Khan performed last year at Nashville’s Downtown Presbyterian Church to an enraptured audience. I was fortunate enough to record the audio to the show, which is now being released by Khan’s label Amarass Records. (UPDATE: I found out the live audio they used for the recording was not the signal from the Marantz field recorder I was operating. It was the audio from a Zoom recorder someone else was operating.)  Copies of the recording will be available at the Emma Bistro show.

On Saturday, October 11th, don’t miss the 2014 Nashville Print Crawl from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Attendees grab a poster template from the first printshop they visit and then travel to shops around town to complete the print. It sounds like a ton of fun. Participating printshops include Sawtooth Printhouse, Hatch Show Print, Isle of Printing, Platetone Printmaking, Goldsmith Press, Kangaroo Press, and Grand Palace Silkscreen.

On Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Oz Nashville hosts Bandaloop, a vertical dance troupe. Words don’t do it justice, so watch the Bandaloop video below.

Centennial Park Black Box Theatre‘s Free Form Friday series returns tomorrow evening with Louisville’s finest experimental multimedia group Camera Lucida.

Camera Lucida (Roxell Karr and Jon Silpayamanant) incorporate interactive video, electronic & acoustic music, and live dancing to create sensory spectacles. Words don’t do them justice. Watch the videos below.

Also performing are Nashville’s post-dub-step / ambient band THE3AM with visual accompaniment by Dig Deep Light Show.

For more info on Free Form Friday, check out this interview I did for Nashville Arts Magazine with Metro Parks’ Mike Teaney.

Metro Parks’ Free Form Friday series returns to Centennial Park on Friday, February 7th with three experimental projects on the rise.

At 8 p.m. is Age, the infinite-sample-loop of Josh Gumiela and Luke Rainey. The duo is one of my favorite things in Nashville. Check them out on their Theatre Intangible artist showcase.

At 9 p.m. is the improvisational duo Regi Wooten and Robert Bond. Guitarist Regi Wooten is the elder sibling in the world famous Wooten Brothers band. Percussionist and electronic artist Robert Bond has worked with artists like The Yardbirds, Bo Diddly, Charlie McCoy and the London Symphony Orchestra. Together, they’re mesmerizing. Regi and Robert also appeared on a Theatre Intangible artist showcase.

Armed with three overhead projectors, liquids of many colors, plates, pans, and matted transparencies, Dig Deep Light Show will create live improv visuals all night. And my, aren’t you lucky, Dig Deep appeared on this Theatre Intangible episode.
